About Us

Colorized is a brand that represents a community passionate about bringing colorful optimism to the darkest parts of humanity through unique and high quality storytelling.

Before Colorized was created, childhood best friends, Justin Levine and Will Gwyn, founded HistoryDaily.org and GroovyHistory.com to shine a nostalgic light on the past to remind our readers that we have so much more in common than the things the news and social media like to point out that which divides us. These content brands are powered by a team of passionate writers that we all call family, and a community of millions of readers and fans on social media that results in over 10 million website views per month.

We owe the inspiration of Colorized to our loyal following who engage with our history content every day. The positive feedback on colorized history photos on GroovyHistory and HistoryDaily have been unprecedented. And to meet the excitement of our readers for the colorized history content, we have created Colorized.com.

Now our loyal readers can view their favorite history photos…some colorized for the very first time. This colorization is possible with our own unique colorizer technology that instantly allows us to see a different side to history than we have ever seen before. We are committed to posting unique stories that give a fresh look to history every single day.

In addition to great content, we are committed to delivering the most value we possibly can to our loyal readers. That is why we are providing our own colorizer application for free to anyone who wants to colorize old photos.

The initial response has been nothing short of extraordinary. With submissions of black and white photos of family members and ancestors never met before, our readers are providing feedback that some of the colorized photos have brought them to tears!

Brian Gilmore
Brian Gilmore

Director of Content

Brian Gilmore has been writing about and studying everything the Internet loves since 2006 and you've probably accidentally read something he's written before, and if you haven't, you're already reading this bio, so that's a good start. He's a culture junkie ranging from Internet culture, to world history, to listening to way more podcasts than the average human being ever should. He's obsessed with the social catalysts that have caused some of the biggest movements of the last few hundred years, including everything from their effect on the pop culture of the time, to where they end up ideologically. The idea that generations have a beginning and an end is fascinating to him, and the fact that their lasting effects at any given point of their evolution can steer the direction of the entire world lead to some interesting questions, and answers, about our current culture at any given time. He also loves retrofuturism, phobias, and the fact that every pop culture icon has at least a few photos of them that make you feel like you might know them. History isn't a collection of stories as much as it is humanity trying its hardest to maintain a grasp on lessons we've learned before as a species, and that is just way too interesting to not look into a few hours a week. Oh and he used to collect Pez dispensers.

Jacob Shelton
Jacob Shelton

Staff Writer

Jacob Shelton is a Los Angeles based writer. For some reason this was the most difficult thing he’s written all day, and here’s the kicker – his girlfriend wrote the funny part of that last sentence. As for the rest of the bio? That’s pure Jacob, baby. He’s obsessed with the ways in which singular, transgressive acts have shaped the broader strokes of history, and he believes in alternate dimensions, which means that he’s great at a dinner party. When he’s not writing about culture, pop or otherwise, he’s adding to his found photograph collection and eavesdropping on strangers in public.
